The Writer's Toolbox

A free printable poster that turns grammar into a writer's toolkit — verbs, similes, dialogue, the five senses and more — so kids ask “which tools can I use today?” instead of “what grammar must I remember?”

In school, language and writing get taught in separate boxes — grammar on one page, a story on another — and kids rarely see how they join up. This poster puts them in the same place: every language concept becomes a tool a writer can reach for. Stick it on the wall where they write.

What’s inside

A two-page printable, designed to print big for the wall (A3) or fit to A4:

  • Page 1 — the Toolbox. Eleven writer’s tools with a tiny example for each: powerful verbs, interesting adjectives, dialogue, similes, metaphors, the five senses, strong openings, exciting endings, paragraphs, punctuation and connectives.
  • Page 2 — Pack, Edit & Level Up. How to pack your toolbox before writing, the five stages of real writing (Plan → Draft → Revise → Edit → Publish), and a ten-level “level-up” ladder that turns grammar into unlockable skills.

How to use it

  1. Put it where they write. The toolbox is only useful if it’s in sight when the page is blank.
  2. Pack before you write. Pick two or three tools to focus on today (not all of them). It makes the goal small and gives kids something specific to hunt for when they edit.
  3. Edit like an author. Good writing isn’t right the first time — it’s improved. Draft freely, then reach back into the toolbox to make it better.

The shift is small but it changes everything: instead of “what grammar must I remember?” kids start asking “which tools can I use in today’s story?” — because every great author has a toolbox, and the more tools you know (and when to use them) the more vivid your stories become.
